Test Patterns by Ryoji Ikeda

Test pattern is a system that converts any type of data (text, sounds, photos and movies) into barcode patterns and binary patterns of 0s and 1s. Through its application, the project aims to examine the relationship between critical points of device performance and the threshold of human perception. In this first edition of the project, an audiovisual installation, test pattern involves a sequence of tests for machines and humans, comprising visual patterns converted and generated from sound waveforms in real–time. The installation comprises 8 computer monitors and 16 loudspeakers aligned on the floor in a dark space. The 8 rectangular surfaces of the screens flicker intensely with black and white images, floating and convulsing in the darkness. 16–channel sound signals are mapped as a grid matrix, passing and slicing the space sharply. Via a real–time computer program, the signal patterns are converted into 8 barcode patterns, which are tightly synchronized. The velocity of the moving images is ultra–fast, some hundreds of frames per second at certain points, providing a performance test for the devices and a response test for visitors’ perceptions.

Schizophrenia

I’ve been doing a considerable amount of research on psychological disorders that cause hallucination. Through this research I was inspired to write a work called Ajna.

I’ve posted just a live/improvised electronic version of the second movement of Ajna. Originally, the score calls for string quintet, percussion, and electronics.

I use poly~ to execute five major systems: grainstretch~ (specifically using time/pitch stretch), a panning control system that can go both counterclockwise and clockwise, degrade~, lores~. I also include a patcher that makes one knob loop one recording continuously and it allows you to duplicate the recording up to 100 times using buffer~ and poly~. Each loop chooses one speaker to play from. All of these functions are programed for a Livid DS1 controller.

This chakra allows you to see the aura of those around you. What’s about the third eye is that your pineal gland is in that exact same location; this gland controls the melatonin and DMT (a natural hallucinogenic) that is released into your brain.

With that being said, the first movement of this piece is a Meditation. I want you to imagine the simplest, most peaceful state of being. We will start with a cleansing from the Tibetan Singing Bowls, here a familiar chant, and then we will reach enlightenment.

What is enlightenment? Perhaps it is true peace… Or maybe it’s the exact opposite.

From the Meditation we go straight into the next movement, Schizophrenia. I want you to feel like a Schizophrenic with voices all around you.

Mediation and Schizophrenia are supposed to portray the opposite waves of mental health; what if they were the same worlds, altered by the power of Ajna.

Waking Up and Up and Up…

Inspired by the movie Inception directed and written by Christopher Nolan, about using a special equipment called PASIV(Portable Automated Somnacin IntraVenous Device) that can allow a group of people to share a dream in order to steal hidden informations from the subconscious of certain target, I wanted to build something that can be represented by different layers and can be synchronized in some way just like the ideas in the movie, that people can have a dream inside a dream inside another dream. And as the dreamer foes deeper, the brain functions accelerate so time stretches, meaning that 5 minutes in reality is an hour in the first layer of dream, 12 hours in the second, 144 hours in the third… until the dreamer falls into limbo, which is infinity. In my project I tried to visualize the process of synchronization and the intensity of each layer as the process goes, and try to figure out a way to bring different layers together and connect them into a whole picture. And as I was looking for ideas, I happen to see some of the amazing pieces using MAX/MSP to do fascinating visualization from system developer Masato TSUTSUI (http://adsr.jp/works/). And I started to study how he built the geometries and was trying to use a similar method to develop this project. And I ended up using a lot of techniques from his piece mai_planets_b.
And here is a demonstration of how my system works.

And the song I used in the demo that has three different time lapsing is Non Je Ne Regrette Rien sang by Edith Piaf from the movie. They used the song as a kick to wake up from a three-layers dream. In the beginning the slowest layer goes in strongest, then the less slow one joined followed by the normal speed of the same song. And in the end they just disappeared accordingly.

Guitar Stethoscope

This last project echoes an idea that we learnt in one of the first classes- a positive feedback system. I use the line output from the pickup of my acoustic guitar, amplify it, and introduce the vibrations back into the guitar’s surface using a transducer. The position of the transducer is used to excite different natural resonant frequencies of the guitar body.

The visualizer is based on the spectrum of the sound produced, and is tuned for different guitar harmonics. Jitter GL shapes are used, and different combinations of frequency bands are used to change the color, position, rotation, camera position and light angle. Spectral analysis is done using bark~ by Tristan Jehan.

Sometime last year, I became interested in a 1940s Russian experiment in which a dog head was kept alive through the use of pumps circulating blood through its head.
I’m not sure how long the dog head was able to survive like this, but I liked the idea of this creature in a scientific state of limbo. For the final project, I built dog, or something resembling a dog, suspended in a partially living, partially robot state.
The physical mechanism itself was equipped with six actuators that moved in response to sound. In it’s chest were three LED strings that also flickered based on the noise in the room.
The noise in the room was a product of youtube dog sound effects cut together and distorted using gain stretch that was again effected by noise in the room.

For our final project, we continued exploring interactions with spatialized audio in hopes of developing new paradigms for thinking about space, sound, and the human body.

Using a Kinect, we developed a system that simultaneously records the sounds and gestures of a user. An individual can start a recording at any point in space, then traverse a path with a specific body part (here, the right hand). This path is recorded in step with the audio, which allows us to trace back the precise location at which a sound was recorded. As soon as the user ends a recording, it begins to loop over both time and space, following the path the recording took. Audio is rendered at the position of another body part (here, again the right hand), which allows the user to “play” space.

In developing this tool, we discovered how important it is to have a frame of reference to “sculpt” spatialized audio. Here, we used a wooden box, on the top of which we created forms. In situations of larger scale, richer environments would likely be needed to keep track of audio.

Questions we hope to continue exploring include:

  • How does audition influence proprioception and vice versa?
  • How can the realm of traditional media (i.e. sculpture) inform the dimensionalization of audio?

Sound Spatializing

For my final project I explored sound spatialization. After gaining access to a very nice IRCAM library (Spat), I was able to begin thinking about the construction of fictional spaces using sound, and mixing them for binaural listening. I began using Max as a post-production tool for video projects and thinking of ways to gain access to the amazing tools it provides. An in process video I have been working on employs a Max Patch I made to produce the sounds of a generically Indian accented text-to-speech voice moving around the person wearing the headphones, and incrementally stopping, at which point drawings appear on the screen, as if the voice moving is the one producing these drawings. I was very interested in thinking about accented text-to-speech that cannot actually speak its implied native tongue as a very strange space, and more that it cannot pronounce any of the words that its accent would by definition give it access to. The original installation of this video (which I sadly do not yet have documentation of), had the video on a small monitor in a very dark conference room, and an extremely long headphone cord from the monitor to a table and a seat about 20 feet away, where the viewer would sit and watch the video and listen to the audio through noise-canceling headphones.

I constructed a series of delay bangs to essentially choreograph the movement of feet walking and this voice. The feet walking have an aperture that is 180deg, so as to mimic how sound emanates from a source like this, and the voice has a smaller aperture, also mimicking how sound travels from a human mouth. I also controlled the yaw of the voice sound source so that the it moves toward the “screen” when the voice stops at the screen. I also introduced a random bang to change the yaw direction while the voice is moving in a circle, to simulate a head turning to direct its voice at the person sitting in the middle, listening. Some things resolved better than others in binaural encoding, but in general, I’m still very excited about moving forward working with this audio production tool for my art practice.

This part of project was limited to the sound sources moving in very simple, linear (though in a polar coordinate system) way. I wanted to create my own custom paths. My first approach was using Autodesk Maya to create animation paths that I could then import into Max and use to “animate” sound sources. The next approach was a simple drawing patch that would also control the sound source, as seen in the video below. This still needs tweaks as it is using mouse location, so the amount of time spent at each part of the drawing also effects how long the sound spends in those parts.

Along the way I also made a simple patch that uses mouse location and speed to control a sound source using the same IRCAM library, and the speed controls the pitch of the sound source. I used this for a while one day to see if it effected how I perceive the space of my computer screen.
