Farmer in the Spectral City

For my entry into FFT, I did something pretty simple. I have been testing out some binaural recordings for a project so I decided to use these as source material (unfortunately one of the mics went out two days ago, and so I’m just sticking with a recording I made walking around Pittsburgh aimlessly). I used the amplitude from these binaural recordings, and then introduced the phases from each channel of the song “Farmer in the City” by Scott Walker, while resynthesizing each of the two binaural channels. The best part is the when cars are passing by. I also added a low noise gate to focus a little more on the prominent sounds.

Spectral Thing

I created a Spectral System by using pfft~ mypvoc, a time stretching device that is created through a phase-vocoder. I programmed a midi-controller (Livid Alias 8) to control the playback rate along with a delay/feedback patcher (called feed me) that uses pfft~ gizmo_loadme which allows overlapping transposition. I also included control over a lores filter that randomly filters sound using metro.

The midi has control of the playback rate on the phase vocoder system. The loop size and loop offset are controlled by metro devices for random variables.

Spectral System: Concentrated But Ciaotic

I simply tried to change as many factors in the frequency domain as possible, and the final results are windy, crowded, but with a concentrated tone. When I played with the numbers in the system, the outcomes somehow sound more like wind bell.

In this video, one of the most striking elements is the use of light. “Skyspace” is profound enough on its own, with it’s clean surfaces and seemingly 2D appearance of the sky, but in this video, the flattening of space is enhanced with the use of matte pastel colors.

For this assignment, I used the fft~ object to create a text file of signal values from an audio clip of “Hotline Bling.” From there, I scaled the values and created a shifting 3×3 color grid from those values. The grid was then meshed with the “Hotline Bling” music video.

As the video progresses, the grid becomes less apparent as the video’s sense of framing becomes more and more prominent.

Assignment 4: The Talk Box

I once again wanted to create a performance tool, and of course what better than a vocoder.

Back in the day I used to have a microKORG, and although it’s extremely cheesy, I loved the vocoder on that thing. I wanted to emulate that set up by adding a few more parameters to the vocoder to make it more customizable. So with this, I utilized Max’s adsr~ which lets me control the Attack Decay Sustain and Release of a synth. But in this case the synth is my voice and a sawtooth wave run through a Fourier Transform in the frequency domain. I then control this all polyphonically with a midi controller.

Project 4 – Spectral Processing (sort of)

For this project, I was trying to (re)create an audio-reactive visualization that uses frequency bands from an audio input, and then maps that to lights as output. I did a similar project for a class where a group and I programmed light shows for the Randy Pausch bridge, but we couldn’t figure out a way to make that process work in real-time. All the audio had to be analyzed and encoded before-hand, then fed into a program that converted the data to DMX so it could be interpreted by the bridge.

That being said, I really wanted to create a system that worked with similar effects, but could react to a live performance, for example, a singers voice. This would allow her to—by singing—control the visual appearance of the room she was performing in.

So I wrangled with the media lab lights (and encountered some “meal-sized” bugs along the way) but ultimately ended up with a system that allows me to map R,G,B values that correspond to frequency band intensities to different sets of lights.

To be honest is looks a lot better in person, but oh well! You get the idea!

For breaking the audio into bands, I actually used a pre-built object called [vz.audiosplittr], which outputs 4 bands of audio as a 0-1 value, which is then scaled into a 255 range and siphoned into RBG channels based on the light’s position.

If the bands are  1-4 with 1 being the lowest frequencies and 4 being the highest, and they are mapped to light patterns A,B,C, and D:

A: Blue from 1, green from 2

B: Green from 2

C: Green from 3, red from 4

D: Red from 4

In the studio space, these light configurations are then arranged into a pattern:

So, the way that FFT comes into this whole mess is by acting as a filtering mechanism that allows for me to control how much of the audio signal comes through (implemented as a noise filter) and a [vectral~] smoothing object which allows me to control if the notes can appear quickly and sharp (more suited for percussive sounds) or is more smooth and gentle (more suited for singing and orchestral sounds).

Blob-based spectrum processing

I found an OpenCV package for Max that allows you to do blob detection from a video. I use the position and size of the blob to control the hi and lo frequencies of a gate filter. Additionally, I use Grainstretch to produce the sounds, controlling grain size, play rate and pitch shift based on the blob size, blob x-position and y-position respectively.

Assignment 4: Image Frequencies Inverse-FFT’d to Sound

The Fourier Analysis of images is similar to the FFT for audio, except the analysis attempts to represent all spatial frequencies as a sum of spatial cosine frequencies. The article here gives a particularly good overview of spatial FFT.

I was curious to know what an image sounds like by translating not in the color or luminance domain but in the realm of spatial frequencies. I began by first taking an incoming video feed, which I downsized to 64 by 64 pixels. Performing the FFT on an image and rendering the amplitude of the frequencies along a gradient from black to white creates a particularly striking representation of the frequencies present. Here, vertical lines are produced by horizontal lines in the video, and vice versa for horizontal lines. Then, I averaged the four quadrants of the two dimensional analysis to extract a simpler form with dimensions 32 by 32. Reading this matrix across and down results in a string of 1024 numbers, which I chose to use as the input for 1024 bins in an audio ifft~, pairing this data with a mirrored transformation of the phases.

Every 5 seconds of this audio corresponds to a different sample video found in the max library:
0-5 sec: Basketball Clip
5-10 sec: Countdown Clip
10-15 sec: Bulldozer Clip
15 – 20 sec: OH clip
20-25 sec: Church and Birds Clip (“Track 1”)
25 – 30 sec: Wheel Clip

The result is particularly interesting. The audio responds to varying degrees of spatial frequencies, as there is no sound with black input and there are more sounds created with greater spatial variance. Depending on the activity in the clip, the audio will ramp up or down (see 5-10 sec interval in attached audio for a good example). I’m hoping to continue exploring how to analyze images with sound, perhaps in this scenario by changing the way the image is sampled to produce a 1024 sample signal.
