Assignment 5: Haptic Explorations

How fine is the resolution of the skin? What areas of the body are most sensitive and effective to learning through touch-based communication? Are vibration motors sufficient means of delivering these “messages”?

I decided to explore these questions by using Max to map the position along a circular potentiometer to the position of vibration along a round array of vibration motors. By running your finger along the potentiometer, you effectively remap your “touch” to an area of the array which, when placed on the skin, is meant to transmit the “sense” of touch.

My inspiration at least partially came from an amazing project by Scott Novich called Sensory-Substitution, where he is attempting to afford deaf individuals the sense of hearing through a different modality: touch.

Black MIDI – Synesthetic AudioVisual Insanity

So, I just recently stumbled on the “Black MIDI” subculture on youtube, which is essentially a music sub-genre that consists of fast paced anime/gaming style songs with literally millions of notes and instruments playing hundreds of MIDI notes simultaneously on a digital visualization application in a crazy fast borderline seizure inducing frenzy of audio-visual madness.

It’s honestly terrifying but fascinating and I thought I’d share.

Project 5 – Facebook Melodies

So, as I described in class, my patch takes keyboard input and mouse position and translates them into binaural/surround-sound, spatialized melodies. The audio sample is the Facebook notification noise, pitch-bent and then fed into a granular synthesis system. As the user types, the ASCII code is converted into 1 of 5 different “notes” which change the pitch of the synthesizer. The mouse X/Y position moves the sound around in space using the HOA plugin.

Recently I stumbled upon an archive of cylinder recordings with thousands of free sounds. A brief history of the cylinder recordings is on the website along with their mission:

From the first recordings made on tinfoil in 1877 to the last produced on celluloid in 1929, cylinders spanned a half-century of technological development in sound recording. As documents of American cultural history and musical style, cylinders serve as an audible witness to the sounds and songs through which typical audiences first encountered the recorded human voice. And for those living at the turn of the 20th century, the most likely source of recorded sound on cylinders would have been Thomas Alva Edison’s crowning achievement, the phonograph. Edison wasn’t the only one in the sound recording business in the first decades of the 20th century; several companies with a great number of recording artists, in addition to the purveyors of the burgeoning disc format, all competed in the nascent musical marketplace. Still, more than any other figure of his time, Edison and the phonograph became synonymous with the cylinder medium. Because of the overwhelming preponderance of cylinder recordings bearing his name in UCSB’s collection, the following history is, we admit, Edison-centric. Nonetheless, Edison’s story is heavily dependent on the stories of numerous musical figures and sound recording technological developments emblematic of the period, and it is our hope that we have fairly represented them here. Herein, a humble primer.

I chose to manipulate one of these recordings called Afterward by Prof. D. Wormser. This cylinder dates back to 1898.

I take this recording and put it through three primary objects: grainstretch~, a feed back engine, and an ambisonic encoder. All of the parameters are programmed to be controlled with a Livid DS1 controller.

Assignment 5: Soundscaping

Soundscaping is the considered placement of sounds to create an acoustic environment. For my performance tool, I choose to explore the ways we interact with sound in space and in turn how we create acoustically comfortable or provocative spaces around the human body.

The idea is very simple: Create a new “sound particle” in every location you clap. From this point on, the closer your hand is to this particle, the louder it becomes. You can have many particles and you can place them wherever you wish.

This implications of this extremely simple idea are quite profound. It begins to address the relationships between chords and harmonies in a way that typical instruments cannot, since sounds are literally placed and sculpted in three-dimensional space.

To interface the Kinect v1 with my mac, I used a free program called Synapse.  If you’d like to download my code via github, you can find it here.

Ambisonics – Ableton 4D ft. Stimming

Since we were on the topic of ambisonics in class, talking about the different varieties of surround sound and what not, I thought I’d share an interesting project that Ableton did about a year ago in collaboration with a hardware company that makes this enormous room-sized speaker setup and minimalist/house artist Stimming. Pretty neat stuff.
