Sometime last year, I became interested in a 1940s Russian experiment in which a dog head was kept alive through the use of pumps circulating blood through its head.
I’m not sure how long the dog head was able to survive like this, but I liked the idea of this creature in a scientific state of limbo. For the final project, I built dog, or something resembling a dog, suspended in a partially living, partially robot state.
The physical mechanism itself was equipped with six actuators that moved in response to sound. In it’s chest were three LED strings that also flickered based on the noise in the room.
The noise in the room was a product of youtube dog sound effects cut together and distorted using gain stretch that was again effected by noise in the room.

When I become a multi-billion-dollar-making, Bill Gates money, artist I will personally invite Drake to dance on all of my work, but until then, I’ll settle for watching “Hotline Bling,”- his latest music video in which he showcases his lack of dance skills (and gorgeously groomed facial hair) on James Turrell’s large scale installation “Skyspace.”

In this video, one of the most striking elements is the use of light. “Skyspace” is profound enough on its own, with it’s clean surfaces and seemingly 2D appearance of the sky, but in this video, the flattening of space is enhanced with the use of matte pastel colors.

For this assignment, I used the fft~ object to create a text file of signal values from an audio clip of “Hotline Bling.” From there, I scaled the values and created a shifting 3×3 color grid from those values. The grid was then meshed with the “Hotline Bling” music video.

As the video progresses, the grid becomes less apparent as the video’s sense of framing becomes more and more prominent.

Assignment 3 – Convolution

1. When I’m lying in bed on a Saturday morning, the only thing I want is pancakes. For this first convolution I decided to put Emeril Lagasse in my kitchen, because he was all the rage back in 2009, but now, six years later, what else does he have to do?

4. The rappers Iggy Azalea and Azaelia Banks are sworn enemies. I happen to like them both equally (not really), but anyway, I thought it would be interesting to convolve one with the other, because, why not.

I used a clip of Iggy Azalea rapping from her 2014 summer hit “Fancy” as the IR recording and had a track of Azaelia Banks convolved with it, and this monstrosity was the result:

Assignment 2: Spraypaint Sound Visualizer

The aspect of time shift I was most fascinated with was the idea of repetition. When a word is repeated many times, it begins to lose it’s meaning, but with other sound patterns such as rhythms, they can be repeated endlessly and still retain their essence.

For this project, I decided to loop a rhythm using one of my favorite compressed mediums: SpRaY pAiNt!

After a while spent tinkering around with the “analyzer” object, I was able to use the “one bang” object to filter out all of the noise of a single clap to output one bang per clap.

The bang was then sent to a series of metro objects that would send two bangs to a “Maxuino” stepper motor patch- one to activate the motor and one to reverse its direction, thus causing a “pressing” motion.

Laser cut acrylic cams were then attached to the stepper motors and mounted above a can of spray paint to press the top.

Fun with Sine Waves

I found this video a few months ago and I found it fascinating how sine waves can manifest in water. I’ve always been interested in the way sound can, in a sense, “show” itself, so I thought this was a great example in the visualization of sound.

Found System: Pizza “Party”

Well…I’m not really sure how to introduce this project so I’m just going to break it down for you:

Signal = Pizza

Feedback “machine” = microwave

For this project, I microwaved a slice of pizza for thirty seconds and put it in the freezer until it returned to room temperature (roughly fifteen minutes). Then I would repeat the cycle.

I’m not really sure what I expected with this project, but after accidentally burning the first two slices, what I realized was that along with making crispy foods soggy, the microwave slowly dehydrates food so that my piece of pizza so it went from this (curtesy of Maximum Flavor Pizza on Craig Street):

Basically, with this project, I was more interested in playing with everyday “transformation machines,” to base my feedback loop upon. And to me, a college student who mostly eats leftovers, while reheating the same food for the third night in a row, I sometimes wonder to myself how many days could I go before either the food itself goes bad or the process of heating and reheating renders food inedible.

I have my answer.
